What Shopify actually costs you per order
Shopify pricing has two layers: a monthly subscription and a per-transaction card fee through Shopify Payments. Most merchants only think about the subscription, but the card fees usually dominate as you grow.
Card fees by plan (UK, online)
- Basic: 2.0% + 25p per online transaction.
- Shopify: 1.7% + 25p.
- Advanced: 1.5% + 25p.
If you use a third-party gateway instead of Shopify Payments, Shopify charges an additional platform fee per transaction. This calculator assumes Shopify Payments.
The break-even rule of thumb
Roughly, the Shopify plan moves up a tier when the saved card fees exceed the extra subscription cost. The crossover from Basic to Shopify happens around £2,000 of monthly card volume, and from Shopify to Advanced around £14,000 of monthly card volume.
What this tool deliberately ignores
App subscriptions, theme costs, Shopify Shipping discounts, returns and chargebacks are excluded. Add these as separate lines in your P&L for an accurate picture.
